Few posts on the internet of how and why but il just get to the bit where we get it working…
Normally you would install Desktop Experience but this includes a lot of tools that you probably wont need.
So….
To install Windows Photo Viewer on an RDS server there are three simple steps you need to follow:
- Copy the “C:\Program Files\Windows Photo Viewer” folder into the program files folder on the RDS server.
- Open a Command Prompt with administrator permissions and run the following:
“Regsvr32 C:\Program Files\Windows Photo Viewer\PhotoViewer.dll” - Import the three .reg files into your RDS server registry.
No reboot is required. You should now have Windows Photo Viewer!
This will work on Server 2012 and also Server 2016.
Hello. Where are the three reg files? Thanks
Should see them on there now with a link.
I get this error: This App can’t run on your PC
Which app are you trying to run? and what OS?
it doesn’t work on my 2012 remote server, the tiffs won’t open and I can’t get the default app browser to see photo viewer because it isn’t an exe. How does windows find photo viewer?
There is no exe its all in the registry files to apply the filetype to the photo viewer
what about png files?
Just right click the .png then open with, choose photo viewer and click always open
Thanks for the steps. I actually needed to go a step further to finish setting it up. This guide helped: https://www.sharepointpals.com/post/windows-server-2016-images-preview-is-not-coming-by-default/
Work on server 2019 RDS?
